Carlos migrates with his parents to a new country, leaving everything he has ever known behind. To help him remember his roots, his grandfather gives him a young tree from his orchard. Carlos finds that raising the tree in the unfamiliar city concrete is difficult, just like the move. Then one day, a girl walks across the concrete to introduce herself. Despite the language and cultural barriers, the two begin a friendship that helps both Carlos and his tree establish roots in their new home.

What an absolutely wonderful book with the most beautiful artwork! This is exactly what we need in today’s world – a beautiful, story about immigration and belonging that shows compassion in the writing and diversity in the illustrations. Hope this author and artist plan on creating more books together!
